A deep hole

Two men are walking through the woods and come across a big deep hole.

‘That looks deep,’ says one.

‘Throw a few pebbles in there and see how deep it is,’ says the other.

They pick up a few pebbles and throw them in and wait, but there is no noise.

‘That is really deep,’ says one. ‘Throw one of those big rocks down there. That should make a noise.’

They pick up a football-sized rock and toss it into the hole and wait… but again they hear nothing.

They look at each other in amazement.

‘Hey, over here in the weeds, there’s a rail. When we toss that in, it has to make some noise!’

The two guys drag the heavy rail over to the hole and throw it in. Not a sound comes from the hole.

Suddenly, out of the nearby woods, a goat appears, running like the wind.

It runs towards the two men, then right past them, and suddenly it jumps into the hole.

The two men are astonished with what they’ve just seen.

Then, out of the woods comes a farmer who sees the men and asks, ‘Hey, have you two guys seen my goat out here?’

‘You bet we did! It ran right past us and jumped straight into this hole!’

‘No,’ says the farmer, ‘that couldn’t have been mine. My goat was tied to a rail.’
